Why I am writing a blog...
I am going to use these blogs to write down my thoughts on the Bible, glad that caught your attention, I love God and I am proud to say that I am a Christian. Now you may have noticed that the title of this blog is Genesis and yes that is the first book I am going to write about as well as it being the beginning of this blog. :)
I am also writing blogs so in the future I can look back at these and help myself understand more about our big man's book.
To the point...
I believe in order to first understand what Genesis is all about you need to know what Genesis means so the definition I have for Genesis is: "an origin, creation, or beginning." That's why Genesis includes how we were created and tells us what happened in the beginning I take Genesis literally and believe that God himself created this universe we live in today, other Christians may disagree with me due to believing in the big bang but God was in charge of it. Personally I don't care how the universe started because the main thing to me is what Jesus did on the cross for us.
Genesis summary
Genesis appears to be split into a section of Primitive History as well as a section for Patriarchal History. The Primitive History records the Creation which is found Genesis chapter 1-2, the fall of man- sin entering the world. Genesis chapters 3-5, The Flood found in Genesis 6-9 and the scattering which is Genesis 10-11. Patriarchal History is the records of the four main people in Genesis, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and Joseph.
In Genesis God created a good universe which was free from sin. God then created Adam and Eve so God could have and create a personal relationship with us. Adam and Eve sinned which brought death, evil and suffering into this world. Evil spread rapidly around the Earth up until God found that there was only one family who God saw anything good in. God told Noah that he was going to send a flood to wipe out all the evil and start a fresh but helped Noah and his family so survive the flood through an Ark in which Noah kept some of the animals in. After the flood, humanity started to populate and spread throughout the world.
God chose Abraham and through himcreated the chosen people and eventually the promised Messiah. The chosen line was passed on to Abraham’s son Isaac and then to his son Jacob. God changed Jacob’s name to Israel and his twelve sons became the ancestors of the twelve tribes of Israel. God had Jacob’s son Joseph sent to Egypt by the negative actions of his brothers selling him because Joseph got this trendy coat. The act however which was intended for evil by the brothers was for the greater good by God and this resulted in Jacob and his family Josephs other brothers being saved from lack of food. This is because Joseph arose to great power in Egypt. I think this is the verse which backs up the greater good by God. Genesis 50:20, "You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives."
I think Genesis tests a person’s faith a lot. When Abraham for instanced was asked to sacrifice his son I believe that was a test of faith to see if he would do anything for God. This would have been a really hard choice for Abraham to do because it took him roughly 100 years to finally get his child. It makes you think about your faith with God and the decisions you make. If you have a choice to make are you making the right choice?
